The Best Postpartum Jeans

Throughout my whole pregnancy, my worst side effect was not being able to wear what I wanted (ok yeah, I had a pretty easy pregnancy). Obviously there are fashion limitations when it comes to growing a baby. Once I was 6 weeks postpartum, I was itching to wear real clothes again. My pre-pregnancy jeans don’t quite fit yet - and I’m not in a rush to squeeze back into them - so I thought it was time to find some postpartum jeans.

Our little family of three spent the afternoon in the West Loop, stopping by Hotel Emily for coffee, and then making our way over to Madewell. Jason is getting into their men’s clothing, and I discovered their denim about a year and a half ago.

My pre-pregnancy size was a 30, but this time I tried on 31s and 32s, and also gave their curvy sizes a try.

I love their 90s straight leg cut, so I went with those again. They’re fitted in the waist, hips, and upper thighs, and are looser mid thigh to the ankle. This cut is so classic and “in,” and will probably be the go-to cut for the next 10 years or so. (Remember how skinny jeans were in for 10 years? Yeah, this is the new skinny jean.)

I found that I liked both the 32, and the 31 curvy. The 32 had a bit too much fabric in the crotch area, and didn’t hold in my stomach at all.

I ended up going with the 31 curvy because it was comfortable and held in my stomach more. I came to the conclusion that “curvy” is basically a half size, so I view my jeans size as 31 ½.

I’ve already worn these postpartum jeans so many times around the house, on our walks, and for different errands. I love that I feel like a normal human being again! Being able to dress nice and look good (and feel like you look good) can make such a difference in your attitude and self-perception.

If you’re looking for postpartum jeans, I highly recommend trying Madwell - particularly their curvy jeans to give you a little extra room and comfort.
