24 Hours in Charleston, SC

My husband, Jason, and I took a trip down to the Low Country in September for a Baby Moon. We stayed in Savannah 2 days, and Charleston for 1, stopping in Beaufort along the way. Here’s how we spent 24 hours in Charleston, SC.

Where To Stay

Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton

I wanted to save a few bucks, so we stayed at a hotel outside of downtown Charleston. The commute to the city wasn’t too bad, but in hindsight, it would have been nice to be able to go to our hotel, and go back out again without driving 15 minutes. However, this Hampton Inn & Suites (Charleston/West Ashley) was really nice and had a 24 hour coffee and tea bar, so we did enjoy staying here.

Where To Eat/Coffee

Poogan’s Porch

We weren’t really feeling any of the dinner options I had looked up in preparation for this trip, so we found Poogan’s Porch on a whim. We loved it. It’s in the French Quarter in an old, renovated house. It was charming to walk up to an old, large home with people dining on the porch, and walk inside and have dinner in a living room. Jason had the steak and I had the country fried pork and a side of she-crab soup. Everything was so delicious. I would definitely recommend it!

Harken Cafe

Harken Cafe is the cutest little coffee shop! It’s so charming and Southern, and I enjoyed my mocha and loaded banana bread. Jason was not a fan of his vanilla latte or breakfast sandwich. I tried his, and the latte did have very little flavor. His sandwich was pretty good, so we just had different opinions. I would recommend this place, but apparently it’s not for everyone.

What To Do

Walk around the French Quarter

We really enjoyed walking around the French Quarter. It’s almost as if we stepped back in time. There are so many old homes and buildings, all well kept, on cobblestone streets and adorned with fire lamps. We could have walked around all day! If you admire architecture you’ll love it!

Angel Oak

We visited the Angel Oak, a really old massive tree. It is pretty cool to see in person, BUT do not go out of your way to see it. Pictures online do it justice, and you can’t really spend more than 15 minutes there. If you’re passing by though, it’s worth a stop (and it’s free).

Waterfront Park

We walked along Waterfront Park at sunset, which was the perfect time to go. There were some families out, and a saxophone player, which was really nice. We walked down the pier and watched the sunset, and saw flying fish! Being by the water is always really nice, and this area was no exception.

French Huguenot Church

The French Huguenot Church, AKA the pink church, is really cool! We didn’t go inside, but it’s gorgeous to walk past and look at. If you’re walking around the French Quarter, make sure to swing by!

Rainbow Row

Rainbow Row is another cute street in the French Quarter. I love seeing the different colorful houses next to each other. If you’re going for a photo-op, just know there are a lot of cars parked along the street, so it can be really hard to get a good picture of multiple houses.

Charleston was so charming and definitely worth going to! If we had more time, I would have liked to stop in some more local shops, and explore a different area besides the French Quarter. It seemed like a really lovely, well maintained town.
