Unique Coffee Shops in Chicago

Chicago is saturated with amazing coffee shops serving quality coffee and pastries. Making your way through all of them takes a lot of time - but it’s a good problem to have. If you’re looking for a spot with something extra special about them, check out some of these unique Chicago coffee shops.

Oromo Cafe

Oromo Cafe is an experience. They serve turkish coffee - not only is the flavor and gritty texture unique, but also the way in which they make it. They put the grounds and water in a gold cup, and then place the cup into a bag of sand and move it around. I do not understand what is going on, but it is mesmerizing to watch! If you order turkish coffee, Oromo cafe delivers it to you on a gold tray with some water and turkish delight. It’s all very ornate and beautiful. You have to try it at least once!

La Malinche Coffee & Tea House

La Malinche Coffee & Tea House is a Mexican coffee shop in Pilsen. They have amazing traditional Mexican drinks - like cafe de olla - and serve their drinks in clay mugs, which adds an earthy flavor and retains heat. Their menu is extensive, serving not only coffee, but fruit teas and a whole breakfast menu. Stop by for a colorful scenery and delicious experience! I recommend trying one of their classic Mexican drinks, like the Dirty Abuelita (hot chocolate with espresso).

Good Ambler

Good Ambler does 2 things particularly well - pastries and aesthetics. I love this coffee shop - not really for the coffee (it is good), but it is such a vibe with chandeliers and an open space concept. It’s a fun spot to take out of town guests, not to mention that it’s in the amazing West Loop . You can look into their kitchen working space and see them crafting their pastries and chocolates, which are incredible by the way.

Sawada

Have you ever had a latte that made your mouth numb - on purpose? I have - once - at Sawada. This is a military-canteen-style coffee shop in the West Loop. The vibe is incredible *cool* and it shares a space with Green Street Smoked Meats (also worth stopping at). They do serve normal coffee drinks, and also Doughnut Vault donuts (the best in all of Chicago!).

Hero

Not all Hero coffee shops were created equal. Well, they all have quality coffee drinks, but the Jackson Street location is the one to go to! It’s tucked into an alley with strung lights and a light up sign. Often referred to as the “Harry Potter-esque” coffee shop, this is truly a unique Chicago coffee shop that exudes charm. It’s located downtown near the Art Institute - you can’t go wrong coming here!
